Growing our economy and delivering fairer taxes

Posted on Thursday 9th April 2015 18:00 by Gordon Bain

Five years ago the United Kingdom stood at the brink of one of the worst financial meltdowns our country has ever seen. Since then the Lib Dems have worked on turning the country around so that our children and grandchildren are not left with the debts of past generations. The job isn't complete but we're on the right road to recovery.

In government we've created 1 million new jobs, given a £700 tax cut to 24 million people and seen the UK grow faster than any other advanced economy. Times have been tough but now, just as we see the green shoots of recovery we can't go back to reckless spending.

With the Lib Dems in government we have also taken more steps then ever before to make sure the wealthiest pay their fair share. Thirty three tax loopholes closed, £1.4 billion clawed back from tax fraud and £9 billion back from tax havens.

More can and should be done to ensure the benefits of a stronger economy and fairer taxes are felt in Ayrshire. Being elected will offer a vital platform that I will use to continue the fight to bring the effects of the recovery closer to home.
