New Sainsbury's Supermarket

Posted on Saturday 26th November 2011 16:00 by Gordon Bain

Irvine has had two main supermarkets for a long time now, and this week we are about to get our third major supermarket. Wednesday this week sees the opening of the new Sainsburys supermarket.

In general I welcome the new investment in the area which will create some badly needed jobs. This new supermarket combined with the new Farmfoods store that has recently opened on Lamont Drive also brings a boost to the adjoining retail park which had been left in the shadows of developments within the nearby Riverway retail park.

Over the last few weeks I've heard a lot of concerns from local residents regarding the traffic and parking issues these new stores have been causing. I believe that a lot of these problems will ease once the development of these sites has been completed. However I will certainly continue to listening to local residents on this issue and press the council to take action should the issue continue after things in the area have returned to relative normality.

On a more positive note however I believe that having more choice when it comes to filling up the car will address the high fuel prices within Irvine. I therefore look forward to some healthy competition at the fuel pumps with both Tesco and the new Sainsburys fighting it out with a price war.
