Andrew Chamberlain

Kilwinning Councillor

Born in South Yorkshire in 1982, Andrew has lived in Ayrshire since 1990. He grew up near Dalry and attended Garnock Academy before going to Glasgow University to study Economics and Philosophy. While at University, Andrew became involved with the Glasgow University Liberal Democrats, serving as their President in his final year. At the same time he agreed to stand as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Kilwinning in the 2007 local elections. Following a whirlwind campaign conducted in between his final exams, Andrew was elected as the first Liberal Councillor to represent Kilwinning in the town's history. A few weeks later he graduated with upper second class honours from university.

As Councillor for Kilwinning, Andrew has championed the rights of local people. He fought against Labour's closure of Baird Avenue Post Office in Kilwinning. He has also been responsible for helping people to put in place Twenty's Plenty zones, erect bus shelters, resurface footpaths, gain compensation for shoddy work done by the Council and resolve all manner of other issues both large and small.

In addition to his work on behalf of the local community, Andrew serves as the Leader of the new Liberal Democrat group on North Ayrshire Council. The Liberal Democrat group has pushed for greater investment in the Council's commercial and industrial properties, for innovative approaches to managing the Council's schools and for a more rigorous approach to consultation with local communities. He is also one of the Council's representatives on the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities, the body responsible for negotiating with the Scottish Government on behalf of Scotland's Councils, and sits on the Scottish Liberal Democrats' Policy Committee. These roles have given Andrew extensive experience of policy-making at a national level.

In his spare time, Andrew enjoys tinkering with old cars and has written occasional articles for various publications.
